We live in uncertain times. Here in the UK much of the political focus is on Brexit, elsewhere in the world it’s about immigration, scarce resources, nuclear armament.
The phrase used to describe this is VUCA. Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous.
But, from a human perspective how do we handle this VUCA world and continue to thrive?
It would be very easy to allow ourselves to become preoccupied with what’s happening in the world and become stressed or even depressed. To live from a place of fear, rather than a place of hope.
We are constantly fed fearful messaging from the media, opposition leaders and influential figures. But, as a species we are more resilient that we are often given credit for.
The fact that you are reading this today is testament to the resilience of life and the wisdom of your ancestors.
So, how can we live a life of hope whilst faced with what’s happening in the world?
For starters, all of what we experience in the world is done so through the Principle of Thought. Outside of our ability to experience, the events in the world are neutral. I know it doesn’t always look that way, but the brain is great at creating a perception that tricks into thinking it’s personal. They aren’t personal, they are just facts. It’s only through our ability to experience these events that we load them with opinion, perspective and judgement, regardless whether you judge them to be good or bad. It’s all just the Principle of Thought taking form moment to moment.
Knowing we are just feeling our thinking and not the world gives us heaps of leverage, because we get to choose what to put our attention on.
Not having to accept every thought as truth and realising that we have been created with the capacity for our thinking to naturally refresh, creates space in our brains for fresh new thought based on who we really are, not on our circumstances.
This means that living in a VUCA world isn’t what causes our fear or anxiety, that’s a function of our thinking and a belief that something outside of us has the power to make us feel fearful or anxious. It does not. It’s all just thought.
With this in mind, we are free to create the type of world we want to live in. One where we see the VUCA world through fearful glasses, or through glasses of possibility.
And, whilst the BREXIT experiment might not work, you have the capacity to weather this storm and create something beautiful on the other side.
So how to live in a VUCA world?
1. Realise that your experience is created by thought, not by the world outside.
2. Your feelings are not coming from a VUCA world, but from with you.
3. You don’t have to pay attention to every thought you have.
4. Not knowing is an acceptable response. Relaxing into not knowing allows your thoughts to settle, making room for fresh new thinking.
